Embracing Love and Diversity is Good for Business: Stand Tall with the LGBTQ+ Community

Embracing Love and Diversity is Good for Business: Stand Tall with the LGBTQ+ Community

Written by Burr Purnell, VidMob Gives Executive Director

In a world that thrives on diversity, acceptance, and love, fellow LGBTQ+ allies must stand in solidarity with the community. In celebration of Pride Month, we must refocus on fostering an open and inclusive society that supports equal rights and opportunities for ALL individuals, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity.

As a representative of VidMob, I am proud to share that our foundation, VidMob Gives, has actively supported various LGBTQ+ nonprofits, such as IGY in Israel, LGBT Ireland, and Mx Cabaret Productions in the US. Through these endeavors, we promote the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals, recognizing that the LGBTQ+ community fights for equality through goals 1, 3, 4, 5, 8, 10, 11, and 16.

Equality for All

One powerful initiative that champions LGBTQ+ inclusion is the Open For Business coalition. This remarkable global alliance of companies advocates for diverse and inclusive societies, recognizing that they are not only better for individuals but also for businesses and economic growth. By highlighting the economic and business case for equality of opportunity, this coalition seeks to counter anti-LGBT+ policies that hinder progress in the countries where they operate. As allies, it is our responsibility to support these efforts and promote open and inclusive societies that build both individual fulfillment and thriving business environments. To educate yourself more on the topic, read this report that supports the notion that LGBT+ inclusion is good for business.

Data Supporting Inclusion

The Open For Business coalition also brings forth compelling data that emphasizes the benefits of LGBTQ+ inclusion. Studies consistently show that diverse and inclusive workplaces lead to increased productivity, improved employee satisfaction, and enhanced creativity. By embracing and celebrating the unique perspectives and contributions of LGBTQ+ individuals, companies, VidMob included, can tap into a rich tapestry of ideas and experiences. Furthermore, inclusive policies and practices contribute to the attraction and retention of top talent, ensuring a competitive edge for businesses.

Supporting the LGBTQ+ Community

Supporting the LGBTQ+ community extends beyond mere words; it requires action and advocacy from each and every one of us. As allies in the business community, we work to uplift and amplify the voices of those facing discrimination and marginalization through building creative assets for our partner nonprofits. Doing what we do best, we strive to promote awareness, education, and acceptance through better-performing content. Knowing these organizations are resource-strapped, being able to support their initiatives with data to be able to continue the work is even more important. Internal employee resource groups, or ERGs, are internal communities of workers with shared identities and interests and a positive way to support employees. VidMob supports the LGBTQ+ community with our Pride ERG, VidPride, whose mission is to amplify the voices of queer individuals while incorporating allies and enabling VidMob’s culture to be safe and inclusive for all. Some of VidPride’s initiatives to support this cause are:

  • Coming Out Stars Workshops, where we educate others on the process of coming out and how that journey affects those involved.
  • Drag Story Time, where we are bringing in a drag queen to read to the community in protest to the anti LGBTQ+ and drag legislation being passed in the US right now.
  • Pride Before Stonewall Walking Tour to educate community members on the history of Pride as Protest in NYC and how we’ve gotten to where we are today.

Through initiatives like VidPride and VidMob Gives, our team actively contributes to building inclusive societies where diversity is celebrated and embraced. We’ll continue to work hand-in-hand with partner programs and agencies to spread love, acceptance, and understanding to ensure that every individual feels valued and respected, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity.

Opportunities to Support During Pride Month

Pride Month is an excellent time to show support and solidarity with the LGBTQ+ community. Here are a few opportunities and suggestions for you to contribute:

  1. Educate Yourself: Take the time to educate yourself about LGBTQ+ history, rights, and current issues. Understanding the challenges faced by the community is essential in becoming an effective ally. There are numerous resources available online, such as articles, documentaries, and books, that can provide valuable insights.
  2. Attend Pride Events: Participate in local Pride parades, events, and celebrations in your area. It demonstrates support and provides an opportunity to connect with LGBTQ+ individuals and organizations.
  3. Donate to LGBTQ+ Nonprofits: Consider donating to reputable LGBTQ+ nonprofits that work towards advancing equality, providing support, and advocating for LGBTQ+ rights. Organizations like the Human Rights Campaign, GLAAD, and The Trevor Project are just a few examples of nonprofits making a significant impact.
  4. Support LGBTQ+-Owned Businesses: Put your money where your mouth is. Seek out and support LGBTQ+-owned businesses. Spending your money at these establishments contributes directly to the economic empowerment of the community.
  5. Use Social Media to Amplify Voices: Utilize your social media platforms to share supportive messages, raise awareness about relevant issues, and amplify the voices of the community. Use relevant hashtags like #PrideMonth, #LoveIsLove, and #LGBTQ to reach a wider audience.
  6. Volunteer Your Time: Offer your time and skills to local LGBTQ+ organizations. Volunteer opportunities can range from event planning and fundraising to providing mentorship or counseling services. Your talent is valid and needed.

Support for the LGBTQ+ community should extend beyond Pride Month. It requires ongoing commitment and effort to foster a more inclusive and accepting society all year, every day. Together, we can create a world where love, respect, and equality prevail.
